Why was my herb-growing experiment a complete failure?

I recently tried to grow some herbs, including basil, coriander and lavender. I bought some nice topsoil, some plant pots etc., and watered them regularly - but practically none of them sprouted, even coriander, which could be considered a weed. Any idea why this could be? At that stage it was fairly cool, perhaps around 10 degrees.

Well, for one, it's much too cold for to start growing herbs. Basil especially is very sensitive to cold temperatures, and won't even sprout if it's not in a warm and dry climate. So wait a few more weeks until the weather starts warming up, and then give it a try. One thing you can do to increase your chances of success is to take the seeds that you want to plant, lightly score them along the seams, and then put them in between two wet paper towels over night (put in a warm place, obviously). This is usually enough to get them to sprout overnight (sometimes it takes two days), so you can tell which seeds are duds and which ones are healthy enough to grow. Good luck with the herb garden!
